3D Printed Doll: From Concept to a Masterpiece

At 3DVector, we take pride in bringing creative visions to life through advanced 3D printing technologies. One of our recent projects was a 3D printed doll, a process that combined precise CAD design, SLA 3D printing, and post-processing techniques. In this blog, we’ll walk you through how we transformed a digital concept into a stunning 3D customized doll—from design to the final painted masterpiece.

Designing the Doll in SolidWorks

The first step in the journey was designing the doll using SolidWorks, a powerful CAD software known for its accuracy and versatility. Starting with a clear vision, we sketched the basic concept of a seated doll with distinctive features. SolidWorks’ robust tools allowed us to model each part of the doll, including the head, limbs, and body, ensuring smooth curves and accurate proportions.

The design phase focused on achieving both functionality and aesthetics. We refined every detail, from the facial structure to the curvature of the arms and legs, ensuring the 3D doll print would look natural and visually appealing. Each part was digitally assembled to test for fit and alignment, eliminating any structural issues that might arise during printing. Once satisfied, the model was exported in STL format, making it ready for the 3D printing phase.

SLA 3D Printing: Bringing the Digital Model to Life

With the SolidWorks file finalized, we moved on to SLA 3D printing, a process ideal for projects requiring precision and a smooth surface finish. SLA printing uses a UV laser to cure liquid resin layer by layer, making it perfect for creating a highly detailed 3D printed doll.

We prepared the digital file using slicing software, where key parameters like layer height and exposure time were fine-tuned to achieve optimal quality. Supports were added to critical overhanging areas, such as the arms and head, to prevent deformation during printing.

The printing process took several hours, as the laser cured each layer of resin. Once the doll was fully printed, it emerged in its raw form—solid and durable but far from the polished result we envisioned. This marked the beginning of the post-processing phase, where the true artistry began.

Post-Processing: From Raw Print to Finished Masterpiece

Post-processing is a critical step that transforms a raw 3D printed toy into a refined, display-worthy piece. For this doll, we focused on three main stages: sanding, smoothing, and painting.

The process began with sanding, a crucial step for removing layer lines and surface imperfections left by the SLA printing process. We started with coarse sandpaper to smooth out rough areas and gradually moved to finer grits to achieve a polished surface. Wet sanding was particularly effective in ensuring an even finish while minimizing dust.

Once sanding was complete, we applied a filler primer to eliminate any remaining micro-imperfections. This step not only smoothed the surface but also created a perfect base for painting.

The final and most exciting step was painting the 3D customized doll. Using acrylic paints and airbrushing techniques, Kasia Moskwinski, who is an expert in Color, Material, and Finish (CMF), brought the doll to life with vibrant colors and intricate details. The facial features, clothing, and accessories were carefully painted by hand, showcasing her exceptional craftsmanship and artistic skill.
