Case Study: 3D Scanning & CAD Design of a Consumer Product

We would like to share a recent case study of 3D Scanning and CAD Design work that we have successfully performed for our GTA-based client. He came into our studio with a family heirloom – a 50+ year old Christmas Ornament that we partially breaking down due to its age. This plastic product has been in our client’s family for three generations and he wanted to re-create it using his 3D Printer in order to pass this treasured Christmas ornament down to future generations.

3D Scanning the 50+ Year Old Object

After a brief meeting with our 3D Scanning Department, we decided to carefully scan our client’s treasured object and edit the final product before sending the .STL file back to our client. The entire scanning process took approximately one hour, but there was additional CAD Design work required in order to edit the parts of the object that were already starting to disintegrate.

CAD Design and Reverse Engineering

Once we had a working CAD file, our Engineering Department focused on getting the final product back to its original shape and glory. This process took a few tries, but thanks to the extensive experience that our Industrial Designers have acquired in the film industry we were able to finesse the STL file to perfection. Once the final design was completed, it was shared with our client who will attempt to print the object on his consumer-grade FDM 3D Printer out of ABS filament.
